Mamma Mia!

What a fun weekend! Tom had a coaching conference to attend in San Antonio so Ellie and I decided to tag along and spend Friday with Dave's (my oldest brother) family. Alethia and I took the kiddos to the pool. Ellie is happiest in water. She would seriously spend the entire day in the pool if I let her. I love it because she is the same with baths and I get my "me-time" while Ellie is taking her 30 minute baths in the evenings. Anyway, we had fun in San Antonio. On Saturday, I sent Ellie back home with Tom and I rode with Ale to Austin to meet up with Sabrina, Rosie, and my mom to see Mamma Mia! The show was amazing. I absolutely loved it. Sabrina bought us all feather boas to wear. Such a cute idea, but when I went to the bathroom during intermission I realized that wearing feather boas in a group is fun, but wearing it alone just looks like you made a poor fashion choice.

After Momma Mia! we went out to eat at Bess, Sandra Bullock's restaurant on 6th street. They gave us their only private room. So cool. The food was good and the company even better. We decided to make it an annual thing and pick a new show each year to attend...girls only. A little side note about the pictures. While waiting for the show to start, we got in trouble for taking pictures in the theatre. Then, when I was reading about the restaurant afterwards, I discovered they had a "no camera on premises" policy. What a bunch of rebel girls we are.

Happy Birthday, Aidyn!

Yesterday was Aidyn's official birthday even though we celebrated it with a pool party over a week ago. We just really like to celebrate birthdays around here! Anyway, Rosie invited us to go play at Chuck E Cheese's with them. Ellie had only been once before so she was in heaven. Of course, when it was time to leave, she had a complete meltdown when I took a sip out of her soda. She threw herself on the ground screaming. I just stared at her in surprise and then walked out the door. Once we got outside, I really got after her. Then she started telling me that she loved me and that I was her best friend. Dang, she's good.

Wanted: 5 minutes of alone time

We have created a monster. For 8 straight days, Ellie was constantly with Tom and I. In the car, on our excursions, even in the hotel room. And now that we are home, she seems to have completely lost the ability to entertain herself! I finally convinced her to go outside to play in her sandbox, but 5 minutes later I hear her crying and she busts in the backdoor begging, "Mommy, Daddy, please don't leave me!" I was showerless and still in my pajamas. Clearly not about to go anywhere. I am still having "issues" from my stomach bug so I tried to lie down for a bit in my room. I told Ellie to go play with her toys. She then proceeded to bring the contents of her toybox to my bed. I was surrounded by books, puzzles, musical instruments, stuffed animals, etc. I envy parents whose children still take naps. I just want some alone time! The joys of being a parent, I guess.

She does have her redeeming qualities, though. Just when she is driving us completely insane, she will do something so adorable that we decide we will keep her after all. Like standing up at dinner and performing the spoon on nose trick. I suspect her Aunt Rosie taught her that one, but we had never seen it before so it totally cracked us up.
She is a bundle of energy, or as one zoo employee informed us, "a firecracker." She has attitude, enthusiasm, and a great sense of humor. But apparently not the ability to entertain herself (at least not without the help of 3 or 4 cousins).

Lengthy vacation recap with overabundance of pictures

Home sweet home! We didn't get home til 3:30 this morning. I do not want to ride in a car for a long, long time. Ellie, however, loved the trip and asked if we could go again. She really did an amazing job on the long car rides, never even complaining. I think she is like her daddy who also loves road trips.

The first day of our vacation was the longest because we drove from Houston to St. Louis. We spent two nights in St. Louis, catching a baseball game and a ride to the top of the Arch. Ellie tried to push the Arch over. When it didn't fall, she asked Tom to help her. It stayed standing. She loved looking out the windows at the top of of the Arch, pushing people out of the way so she could see. Check out the amazing view from the top! Ellie did fairly well at the ball game as well, but we ended up leaving in the 6th inning.
From St. Louis, we traveled to Council Bluffs, Iowa for a family reunion. The family reunion was for my dad's side of the family, but my main incentive for going was to see my grandpa on my mom's side. He was diagnosed with colon cancer, the same cancer that my grandma succumbed to last year. I really wanted to spend some time with my grandpa while he was still feeling well. He is the most amazing man...a quiet, gentle person, a hard worker, someone who always looks for the best in people. Every time I see him, he always says, "How's my Holly girl?" and then gives me his trademark rib-crushing hug. I love his hugs. My grandpa and I were able to spend time walking around his beautiful property, feeding the horse, and admiring his huge garden.
We stayed three nights in Council Bluffs. Unfortunately, Tom, and I decided to take turns coming down with the worst stomach bug of all time (Ellie was sick one night in St. Louis, but we had assumed it was all the junk food she ate at the ball game). I seriously thought I was in labor at first until I started throwing up. It was so painful and exhausting. When I recovered, I was able to go with my family to take Ellie to the Omaha Zoo. This was the same Zoo that my parents and grandparents would always take me to growing up. I have such great memories of this zoo and it was such a neat experience to be able to take my own child. On our last day in Council Bluffs, my parents took us on a "trip down memory lane." We went by their high school where they met and fell in love, their old church, and my mom's childhood home. When we stopped to take pictures in front of my mom's old home, a neighbor came out to ask us what we were doing and then informed us that the place is now a crack house. We decided not to go ask for a tour.

On our way home, we stayed one night in Kansas City and went to another baseball game. This game was right in the middle of the day and was scorching hot so we only lasted 4 innings and then got in the car for the long drive home. By this point, my ankles and feet were swollen, my pregnant belly bloated, and my mood irritable. I whined a lot about being in the car for so long, but honestly, I enjoyed talking and holding hands with Tom while we drove and I liked being in such close proximity to the two people I love the most.

Party, party, party

We have really been partying it up this weekend. Yesterday, Mia had a pool party for which Ellie was beyond excited. I was able to debut my new maternity swimsuit in front of 72 people. Awesome. I also got nailed by my 11 year old niece as she came down the slide. I had just caught Ellie and was posing for a picture when BAM!...feet in the side. My whole right hip is one big bruise. Who stands and poses for pictures in front of a waterslide? I totally deserved it. But I am really glad that I wasn't facing forward to take the hit in my uterus.
Because we didn't have enough pizza and cake at Mia's party, we decided to head over to Nana's house today for some more. Tom's brother Mike is turning 29. Ellie adores her Uncle Mike. He will get down on the floor and play with her like the big kid that he is. And of course, even though it wasn't her birthday, Ellie did not leave empty handed. Nana had all sorts of goodies for Ellie to take on our road trip. Tomorrow will be our longest day of travel...about 14 hours. I am looking forward to this trip and hopefully I will have lots of fun stories and pictures to share when we return.

Ramblings

Ellie and I have kept busy the past few days playing with cousins. Today we decided to stay home and relax, meaning I sent her outside to play in her sandbox while I attempted to clean my house. She got the sandbox for her birthday and it keeps her entertained for a long time. Luckily, it has a lid because Kali likes to dig in it, too.

Ellie and I headed over to the library this afternoon to stock up on books for our long road trip next week. We showed up right in time for one of the Children's Programs. They had this lady bring two Texas Longhorn steers and give a presentation about them. Ellie wasn't really interested in what the lady was saying, but she was fascinated by the cows with long horns. If I had actually planned it, I totally would have brought my camera.

I have to say, I am loving my summer home with Ellie and Tom. I didn't realize just how stressed school was making me, but I feel so free now. Like a huge load has been lifted off my shoulders (and placed in my uterus, I might add).

A few funny things Ellie has been doing/saying lately:
-When she is hungry, she says her "tummy's grubbing." I think it is so cute that I don't bother correcting her.
-She calls Tom "Pookie Daddy." I am almost embarrassed to type that since you can guess where she picked up that little gem.
-She told Tom she is going to marry me. And that she is going to have a baby. I overheard Tom explaining to her that first she needs to go to college, then get married, and then have kids. Oh, and that she can't marry me because I am already married to him. So then she said she was going to marry Kolby. I am sure she will get over her desire to marry family members by the time she is 25.

Summer fun in pictures

Making the rounds

We are only two days into summer and already Ellie and I have descended upon the following people:

1. Sabrina, Kolby, and Olivia
2. Nana, with a surprise visit from Tara and Baby Brannon
3. Rosie and the girls whom Ellie affectionately refers to as "the Rosies"
4. Today we go back to Sabrina's only she will be in Mexico, but my Mom will be there with Kolby and Olivia so we can still be entertained.

Yesterday morning, I needed to get a little cleaning done so I pulled Ellie's old plastic wading pool out of the garage and filled it with water. Ellie told me the pool was the "perfect size" for her. With only a bucket and a cup, she entertained herself for over an hour. Kali kept jumping in with her to cool off, making the water an interesting mix of dirt and hair. I was fine with it until I saw Ellie taking a sip out of her cup of pool water.

Preparing for Summer

So, I was sitting at my desk today, dreaming of summer while my students were taking their final exam, and I decided I needed to make a list of all the stuff I wanted/needed to do this summer. I love making lists. It makes me feel so efficient, like I might actually get stuff done. I am concerned that I will be tempted to read books all summer while Ellie watches Noggin ("It's preschool on TV!"). I think I will schedule one big fun day a week for Ellie and then on the other days we will stay busy playing with cousins or swimming or going to the park or whatever else is close, convenient, and free.

Fun Stuff I Want to Do This Summer:

-Take Ellie to the beach

-Take Ellie to NASA

-Take Ellie to the Children’s Museum

-Take Ellie to Sea World

-Take Ellie to the zoo (in Omaha)

-Take Ellie to baseball games (in St. Louis and Kansas City)

-Take Ellie to Sibling Orientation class at hospital

-Spend lots of time at Grandma’s, specifically in the pool

-Teach Ellie to swim

Not Fun Stuff I Need to Do This Summer:

-Weed through Ellie’s toys. Condense from three rooms to just one.

-Haul all the baby stuff out of the garage (crib, swing, bouncer, car seats, etc.) and clean it all off. Such a shame the roof collapsed on it.

-Probably should clean garage while at it.

-Take old dresser out of garage. Wash, sand, and paint it for baby.

-Clean out Computer Room.

-Turn Computer Room into Nursery.

-Deep clean the freaking house already. Or maybe just hire a maid.
