Strep throat, baby

Poor Ellie has strep throat. She wasn't feeling well all weekend and when I picked her up from grandma's house yesterday, she had a temp of 101.8. She ended up sleeping in bed with me all night last night (Daddy got booted to the couch). This morning she was still really hot and her fever spiked to 103.6. Ellie's cousin had strep throat last week so I kind of thought she may have shared it with Ellie. The doctor swabbed her throat and sure enough it came back positive for strep. I was actually relieved that it was something that I could do something about...unlike her constant congestion problem.

Also, Ellie managed to gain half a pound in just a week. She is now 17 pounds, 2 1/2 ounces. Not even a little strep will keep her from chowing down!

16 pounds, 10 3/4 ounces

We took Ellie to see Dr. Nguyen this morning since she is always so congested and it has been really affecting her sleep (and mine!). Ellie was her usual happy self, smiling and talking at everyone. Of course, she is also snorting like a little pig due to her stuffy nose. Dr. Nguyen thinks Ellie has allergies and gave her some medicine to try. Next month at her well-baby exam she is going to get blood work done to test for specific allergies. Despite her congestion, she is really happy and healthy. And she really likes her food...she weighed in at 16 pounds, 10 3/4 ounces. She gained 1 pound, 3 ounces in just a month!
Right now she is playing on the floor at my feet. She keeps rolling onto her belly, but seems to have forgotten how to roll from her belly to her back. So she will play on her tummy for a short time and then start fussing at me to roll her back over. So I do, but then she promptly rolls onto her tummy again and we start the whole process all over again.

Water stories

I am the sole bather of Ellie. It is true. Ever since we brought her home from the hospital, Tom has not once given her a bath. He tries to claim that because he gave her the first bath in the hospital, the one immediately after birth, that it counts as multiple baths since "she will never be that dirty again." In all fairness, I love giving baths to Ellie because we take them together and it is a lot of fun for both of us. But, I decided that tonight it was time for Tom to give her a bath. She loves them so much and it will be good bonding time with Daddy. And naturally I was right...she loved every minute of it! Now if I may direct your attention to the red mark above Ellie's right eye. When I went to nurse her over my lunch hour, I noticed it immediately. I casually asked Daycare Lady #1 what happened. She had no idea, but said it appeared around midmorning and perhaps it was a mosquito bite. It is definitely not a mosquito bite. A mosquito bite looks like the red mark below Ellie's eye. My poor little marked up babe.

After Ellie had her bath and was all snug in her pajamas, I grabbed a glass of water and went to sit down with her to read bedtime stories. As she is wont to do these days, she immediately grabbed for the glass in my hand, spilling it all over both of us in the process. I decided to let her have a sip and she LOVED it! She lapped at it with her little tongue like an overeager puppy. Of course, after letting her try it, she wouldn't let me drink out of it without grabbing for it and leaning towards it with her mouth open and tongue out.

BTW, notice my lovely hand art in the above pic? I put on a Henna Tattoo program for my teens at the library, but since only 2 kids showed, I had plenty of time to do my own hand. Ellie thinks it is very cool (she told me so).

5 months

Dear Ellie,

Today is your 5 month birthday! It is hard for me to believe that it has already been 5 months since you joined our little family.

You have become a definite Mama's Girl. Especially in the evenings when it is time for bed. You will only let Mommy rock you to sleep, even though it makes Daddy feel bad. I reassure Daddy that it is only because he doesn't smell like milk and offer to squirt some on him, but he doesn't feel that bad. Besides, you still think Daddy is pretty darn fun...especially when he acts like a crazy animal and pretends to eat you all up!

The ladies at daycare call you Ms. Nosey because you like to be in the midst of things, watching what is going on. You will play happily with the toys as long as you can see what everyone else is doing. When it is time for them to feed some of the other babies, they move you to the high chair, too, because you insist on watching the other babies eat. Your mama is really nosey, too, so I understand.

You are really enjoying your rice cereal, oatmeal, and sweet potatoes. I think we are going to try carrots next...I heard it makes for fun poo! You are such a messy eater and the way you lap at the spoon is almost like you are trying to milk it. But you will eat every bite and get mad when the bowl is empty.

You are such a happy, little thing. Quick to break into smiles when you see Daddy or me. You laugh when we make funny faces, or talk in silly voices, or kiss your belly, or even just blink. You often wake up in the morning just talking and playing until you see my face peering over the crib at you...then you break into big smiles.

I love every minute I spend with you Ellie-belly (even those minutes in the middle of the night when I may not act like I am loving it). I love your sweet smile, your funny laugh, your chubby legs, the way you hold me tight and bury your face in my shoulder, how you roll towards me and reach for me, how happy you make me feel.

Happy 5 months, Chubbers!

Love,
Mama

Kolby's 1st Birthday!

On Saturday, Ellie went to her cousin Kolby's first birthday party. He had a bug-themed party that was super cute. It got me thinking about Ellie's first birthday party (which is all of 7 months away, but I still spent an hour Googling '1st birthday party ideas'). I am really not creative or 'crafty' at all. Good thing my brothers all married really creative women who can help (and by help I mean do) Ellie's birthday party for me!

As an afterthought...why is my almost 5 month old baby BIGGER than both of her 1 year old cousins???

Feet, feet, glorious feet!

Ellie discovered her feet quite some time ago, but this past week she has been especially enamored of them! They are her new favorite toys...she even has managed to get her big toe in her mouth a few times. Yum!

Further Ellie news, she is now proficient at rolling from all positions! She has also figured out how to scoot backwards. Welllll...I don't think she intends to because she normally does it when her toys are placed in front of her and somehow she always ends up further away from them!

Oh, follow-up on the last post: When I picked Ellie up from daycare that day, she had the smelliest, dirty diaper all for me! So the next morning when I heard her pooing on the way to work, I made sure I changed her at the daycare before rushing off. :)

Losing my hair...and my mind!

I have noticed that in the past month, I have been losing tons of hair! It is terrible. And it is everywhere...especially on Ellie. Every time I turn around, she has some of my hair in her fist that is being inserted into her mouth. I am sure I will be bald soon and will no longer have to deal with it.

Ellie is still as cute and happy as ever except she reverted back to multiple nursing a night. I had gotten so used to her just waking up sometime in the 3 to 5 hour to nurse, but for the past week or so she has decided she HAS to eat at 12 and 4am as well. I try being sneaky and sending her Daddy in to rock her with the paci, but she is having none of it. I get really annoyed at all the articles I read that say baby should be sleeping through the night right now. Not my baby!

The forgetfulness that plagued me throughout my pregnancy did not go away with Ellie's birth. I am always forgetting things. Unfortunately, today is was the parts to my pump which I left on the drying rack at home. Since I work 45 minutes from home, there was no way I could go back for it. So...I am sneaking away from work today to go nurse Ellie at her daycare. I always go over my lunch hour anyway, but it is a lot more difficult timing those 2 extra feedings and trying to get someone to cover for me at work. Bleh.

Ooh, something fun! I have been such a slacker giving Ellie cereal because she is so tired by the time we get home in the evening that she really isn't up for it. So I sent cereal with her to daycare! I figure I'll let them deal with all the messy fun! :) Speaking of messy fun, this is how bad of a mother I am...on the drive to work I can usually hear Ellie having major explosions in her diaper, but since I am always running late I just drop her off and pretend not to notice the smell or oozings leaking through her clothes. Terrible, I know! I am sure the daycare ladies just love me!
